Some of Gigablast Gets a Makeover and Goes Green

It appears that Gigablast has undergone a makeover of sorts. Although the Gigablast home page and their results pages have the same "old" look, some of their inside page have been redesigned and looks really nice. For example, their new "about us" page sports a pic of Matt and lots of other info.

Other pages with a new and fresh look include the products & services page, query syntax page, and Gigabot (their spider) page. You'll also see that Gigablast is promoting its "Environmentally Friendly Search"

We at Gigablast take energy conservation, energy efficiency, and environmental pollution very seriously. Our superior software engineering allows us to quickly index and search billions upon billions of webpages using less than 0.1% of the computer hardware, electricity, and general infrastructure required by our competitors.

I wonder if a new UI's for the home page and results pages are coming soon?

Gigablast Debuts Toolbar for Internet Explorer

Gigablast has released a toolbar for Internet Explorer that offers a couple of features I haven't seen elsewhere:

  • Search the sites linked from the current page
  • Search the sites in your bookmarks

A Gigablast toolbar for Firefox isn't available yet but a MyCroft plug-in can be found here.

Presently, the Gigablast index provides searchable access to over 2 billion pages.

Gigablast Releases Travel and Blog Search Verticals

I just noticed that Matt Wells over at Gigablast has released Gigablast Blogs and Gigablast Travel.

These new specialty engines (verticals, if you like) appear to allow the searcher to search topic-focused portions of the main Gigablast web database of more than two billion pages. I hope to spend some time checking these new resources out over the weekend. If you're not familiar with Matt Wells, here's a very interesting "conversation" about Gigablast and web search in general between Matt and Steve Kirsch that was published last year in ACM Queue.

New From Gigablast: Related Pages

Since December, Gigablast has been very busy rolling out new services and expanding their index. Today, they're unveiling links to "Related Pages" at the top of all serp. Gigablast defines related pages as, "relevant search results which do not necessarily contain the searcher's query terms.contain the searcher’s query terms." A bit more about Gigablast's Related Pages here.

Two weeks ago we blogged about Gigablast expanding their index size to over 1.5 billion pages.
