Google Tests Permanent Sidebar for Results, Blue Submit Buttons for Homepage
Lately, Google is experimenting more than Sheldon Cooper on their homepage - and now, also on their search results.
They're testing a permanent left sidebar in their search results, which would turn the results into three columns: new sidebar, organic results, search ads. Hmm, this reminds us of Bing. And Bing reminded us of Ask's 3D design (which they've since abandoned).
Additionally, after experimenting with removing the submit buttons on the homepage, now Google is bringing back the buttons and testing them with a new color: bright, primary blue.
In the Google help forums, two screenshots of these experiments were posted:

I dont like it. I liked the original design the best with the standard buttons and options at the top.

I don't mind the buttons, but the sidebar makes things a bit more complex.
Although it does make searching news archives a little easier (at the cost of more clicking), it violates the very basic design concept that made Google what it is - keep it simple, stupid.

The blue buttons give it a fresh feel Though the home page design is so much not like "Google". If they really want to do it, they can add the feature to iGoogle instead, so people would use it if they really want to.

I'm not too keen on the new look as I'm used to the original design. I think the buttons stand out too much and there's nothing wrong with the old design as it looks clean and simple. As for the sidebar, it looks like it would get in the way. Hopefully they don't go ahead with this.

As a whole, I don't mind it. It was a shock at first because I was in a room with a bunch of other computers and mine was the only one that looked this way. Though I have no idea why. But now that I know it is a test I'm not worried about it.

I don't like it. I've noticed it's not on every machine either. How does one avoid it?

Can't stand the annoying "Everything" sidebar,It takes up too much room.

I agree. I hate this new look. It would be a mistake to keep it.

Hate it. And now I hate Google. Turned me into a Hater overnight. My Wife and Kids now Hate Google too for this Big Brotheresque Deed. When our neighbors found out they started Hating Google too. Which has turned our town into a seething village of New Google Browser Button Haters. On THANKSGIVING Day. THANKSGIVING!!!?!?!!
Seriously, All kidding aside. I STILL HATE IT.
Ruined our Thanksgiving. LOL. Okay, really serious now-->
It's almost - gasp- Microsoftian: Big Brotheresque in it's deployment, and a bellwhether of organizational decline---> after reaching the limits of their once innovative technological capacity, the resort to cosmetic interface changes.
Bottom Line: Leave the Buttons Alone or prepare to have the Googleplex burnt down. Henh.

Why bother changing at all? Just improve on the results the search is giving. Most of the times, I get all spams (Websites wanting to get higher rank is putting unrelated content on their website).

I really hate this new "Everything" Sidebar. Less can definitely be more and truly in this case. I'm a web designer and with all of my computer knowledge, even I'm looking at this sidebar junk and think, "Wha...? Go away.
Most people, even in 2010 are not too terribly computer literate. Don't complicate things.

I really think everything they are doing is aesthetically displeasing. The buttons are too bright, the search results page seems more cluttered and it seems harder to find what I want. Like many have already said, less is definitely more when it comes to a search engine.

HATE IT! Google is the only search engine i use. I will switch.
steve January 16, 2010 9:36 PM
HATE it. i just sent a nasty-gram to google outlining my disgust. if i wanted a sidebar, i would enable it in my options. i don't appreciate having one forced upon me. if this becomes a permanent change, i will no longer use google. period. i'd rather use scroogle scraper.
anon January 27, 2010 11:09 PM
If they make the sidebar change permanent, I will never use Google again. I like Bing almost as much as I like Google, and I will have no problem switching. The sidebar makes the whole search results page look so claustrophobic that I can't look at it for more than a couple of seconds. You can't have one layout for so long and then change it so drastically to the point where you look like a different site altogether. It doesn't make sense. I've already stopped reading CNN after they dramatically changed their site for the worse, so I have no problem switching to Bing. That said, the blue buttons, although acceptable, look sophomoric at best. It's seems as though it was "Bring Your Child to Work Day" at Google, only this time it was "Bring Your Child to Work and Let Them Run the Company However They See Fit Day". Who are these morons kidding?
