Proposed Bill to Give White House Authority to Control Internet in Emergency
A proposed Bill in the U.S. Senate would give the White House control of the internet in the case of emergency. The bill, S.773 introduced by Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) and Sen. Olympia Snow (R-ME) is pretty vague, which is alarming to internet companies and civil rights groups alike.
According to CNET, the bill would allow the White House to declare cybersecurity emergencies. It also allows the government to choose which internet companies they deem "critical." These companies would then be subject to regulations surrounding hiring employees, information that would need to be disclosed and when the government could take over their network.
What do you think of this bill? Let us know by leaving a comment.

What is next? Break into our house to take our guns? Tell us what church we must go to? Have they burned the Constitution?

Does this bring to mind, for anyone, what the government of Iran tried to do during post-election riots? I wouldn't trust these sneaky bastards with control of any communication medium.
Jeff August 28, 2009 5:48 PM
What is the world coming to? Another way the government is overstepping its bounds... of course they will continue to do this until we stop them, which we won't.. because nobody cares.

Okpulot Taha offers a solution to the security problem.
"A proactive method is to create private and secured intranet systems for sensitive services, an intranet "unplugged" from the public internet. A secured unique system, strengthening security, this is the right approach."
I suspect this bill is more of a way for the government to expand and get fingers into another pot than a real concern for security.
Can anybody say Orwellian?
Those who were paying attention to Iran this spring saw what a government can do when it shuts down the internet.
Yes Okpulot Taha this bill is idiocy, stupidity and dangerous.

Can't believe that anyone actually believes this garbage! Don't you think CNN and the other networks would run a story like this! Seriously, Americans need to wise up about politics and realize that these types of stories aren't true! The first rule about things you read on the internet is "BE DOUBTFUL" then investigate for yourself.

From messaging to smoke signals...... Stand up America and demand answers....... Washington and the Czars must believe we are stupid. Wait until 2010 and 2012 elections.....
First Amendment to the United States Constitution
FREEDOM OF SPEECH...US CONSTITUTION
The First Amendment to the United States Constitution is the part of the Bill of Rights that expressly prohibits the Congress from making laws "respecting an establishment of religion", prohibiting the free exercise of religion, infringing the freedom of speech, infringing the freedom of the press, limiting the right to peaceably assemble, or limiting the right to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
Although the First Amendment only explicitly applies to the Congress, the Supreme Court has interpreted it as applying to the executive and judicial branches. Additionally, in the 20th century, the Supreme Court held that the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment applies the limitations of the First Amendment to each state, including any local government within a state.

Boy howdy, now ain't that the truth!
Those who put out the greatest amount of lies on our internet is our government!
Should Obama or any president be given authority over our free speech internet, our internet will become a political propaganda machine.
I can deal with gossipy girls calling each other skanks and sluts, but the government, step out of line and they come and take you away.
By-the-by, censorship is anti-America. I do not much cotton to those who censor my articles.

Sabrina, here is the bill at the library of Congress: http://www.thomas.gov/cgi-bin/query/F?c111:1:./temp/~c111oX6MgY:e54375:
Section 18, number 2
"The President--
(1) within 1 year after the date of enactment of this Act, shall develop and implement a comprehensive national cybersecurity strategy, which shall include--
(A) a long-term vision of the Nation's cybersecurity future; and
(B) a plan that encompasses all aspects of national security, including the participation of the private sector, including critical infrastructure operators and managers;
(2) may declare a cybersecurity emergency and order the limitation or shutdown of Internet traffic to and from any compromised Federal Government or United States critical infrastructure information system or network;"
Oh I see that Okpulot Taha beat me to it.
Oh well, great minds think alike.

Internet alternative: Short Wave Radio. BTW, Nathania Johnson, they have yanked the bill right out of the Library of Congress web site! Can't have the slaves find out what is being planned for them...
I have been watching and fighting these tyrannists for over 40 years. Prepare for the 2nd American Revolution...

S.773 is still on the Library of Congress website. However, they don't keep search results for too long.
Anyone who is interested should just go to Thomas.gov and search for S.773.

The reason it's not on CNN or many other networks is because they don't care to talk about it.

Now this is kind of scary... kind of like ripoffreport where anyone can post a complaint and its all of a sudden... Law.

Wow, what a fuss in the blogosphere.
Here in Holland all you do online is recorded. If you go out with your mobile phone, the government keeps a record where you are at what time. The government keeps a record of who you called, when and how long. All the data is kept for a year and a half. Not only our government can browse through data, agencies of 'befriended' nations can do this too. No warrants or judge decisions are needed 'in case of emergency'. We know that 'emergency' is something that already might happen when a neighbor in the street is suspected of something.
It once started as a 'necessary' anti-terrorism measurement because of 9-11, but now we are hearing voices stating that the data should also be used to hunt down nasty people who listened to an MP3, nasty people saying nasty things and such.
It doesn't surprise me really. As soon as each Dutch citizen was ordered to carry ID, even while working in his own garden for instance, many people were fined. I.e. people who were just walking down the street and were completely clean. The Netherlands as depicted in the opening scene of Pulp Fiction is gone. And there is more. You need to leave fingerprints in order to get an ID, which you need in order to go to work or just working in your garden. Babies need their own ID and it is not allowed to smile on the photo. I can go on with the changes that turned the Netherlands in a weird, almost DDR-like country.
Sure. A government should be able to take control over an area, over an airport, over a ship, over a building, whatever. So what exactly does this bill add? The US government wants a special back door or something? Impossible. And it is useless as long as there is a rest of the world not doing anything.
I am quite skeptical. In Holland we've seen many stupid ideas turned into law. The streets have not become safer. The internet has not become safer. There have not been fewer crimes. What we do have, occasionally, is a stir about new propositions further restricting freedom. We already got used to the fact that we can't no longer vote for people with actual power since the EU government is in charge and we are just a tiny nation with 0,0 influence on what happens in our own country. Yes, we can bail out if a far majority of the government wants that.
Be careful with laws.

Internet some time creates serious problem, i think its fine if white house handle the authority to control internet. But this should not lead to a shutdown of internet... I can imagine my life with out internet :(
Window Sunscreen August 29, 2009 8:01 PM
What? No, no and more no. Absolutely not. No one should control the internet. Ever. Sure, we might have to prioritize certain hubs that make the connections happens, but dammit, that should only be used to DEFEND them from attacks, not to control their network.
The LAST thing I want is for the government to take over communication channels. The internet works just fine now.
Stop with your stupid laws!

Just another piece of bizarre Zionist Agenda of Rockefeller family to dominate the world. Internet domination is just a part of that agenda.
