Yahoo! Updates UI on Local Search Results

Yahoo! has made some UI changes to their local search results. The update is centralized around the idea of reducing clicks.

When you're viewing a result, the links to Yahoo! Shortcut information (reviews, photos, etc.) now load the content directly on the page you're viewing.

Additionally, when you do a category local search on Yahoo!'s main search, a local section will pop up, enabling the Yahoo! Shortcut content to be accessed in the results page.

Raleigh must be in some kind of vortex, though, because I couldn't get this feature to work for my hometown. But I can get it to work for other cities of varying populations.

Interesting info. Thanks much for posting it.

This doesn't look like a win/win, IMHO.

This is very nice for Yahoo, which keeps control of the customer.

Maybe not so nice for the site owner, which may not get a visitor to his site if the customer finds the info they asked for by staying on the Yahoo page.

This loss in traffic could be a real loss in revenue.

In addition, the opportunity to tell the customer about more than just their original query is lost if the customer never visits the site.

For instance, a retailer of cell phones who also sells MP4s may never get the chance to present the additional product line to a customer who only gets the cell phone info from the Yahoo page that resulted from his 'cell phone my hometown' query.

I wonder if others are going to see it like this.
