Using Video Spokespeople to Increase Landing Page Conversions

When I speak on the topic of landing page optimization I am often asked about embedded video and the use of the walk-on video spokespeople that appear from the lower right corner of the page.
Of course the effectiveness of embedded video players and spokespeople depend on the offer, product, and of course the context and intent of the audience.
Do spokespeople actually increase conversion?
To readers of my column the answer should be familiar by now - test it. We often include the addition of spokespeople in our landing page tests.
Recent tests on companies using Innovative Media Group's video spokespeople suggest that dramatic gains can be realized:
- ClosetWorld added embedded video to their landing page and then a video spokesperson as well. This increased conversion rates from 0.5% to 1.0% and 2.2% respectively.
- Tanberg increased the conversion on their lead-generation page from 0.75% to 2.2% by adding a spokesperson.
Big companies are piling onto the bandwagon as well. Other recent successes include Napster, Service Magic, and Rhapsody.

These types of videos can be good for companies who want to get a good message across to their customers. We are starting to implement a similar concept with a selection of actors who talk about the company on the web sites at the top.

Cost & time can both be deterrents for using video. But the effectiveness of the medium can not be understated. Try using Done In Sixty Seconds (http://www.donein60.com) Gives you a great deal of customization, affordable price point and an easy to use creation process...plus a lot of add-ons. Don't forget the importance of making sure people can see your video...not just on your website but other places as well...walk-on videos are limited that way.

An interesting tool. Agree with other comment that time and cost can be deterrents, especially in SMBs as we lose the "medium" businesses and begin mining the "Small" businesses. I'm hoping as a local provider in southern Wisconsin, that I can do this locally, with the business owners themselves and make the locality and the absence of paid actors a compelling feature set.

Obviously, a moving object is going to draw more attention than a static image. And a moving object that talks to you, well...
I hope to be able to block those ads real soon. The last thing I want is a website pushing audio out my speakers... since browsers don't come with a volume control.

Good article,
Frankly, on a personal level, I am not a big fan of “video spokes people”. I think besides the fact that they might seem intrusive, they immediately create an emotional reaction… Do I like her/him? Does he/she remind me of my school teacher? Does she/he seem arrogant? Pushy? Fake?
Bottom line, people have a reaction to “people” and get first impressions EVEN BEFORE seeing the product or service offered on the website.
We plan to A/B test a “video spokes person” vs an animated video on a few of our customer’s websites.
We will get accurate results.
Will it prove that my gut feeling is right? Maybe, in a specific customer’s website…
But I am guessing we will have to test it many times before coming up with a strong answer.
And even then, like the implied in the above, we will still probably recommend to “test it” on every specific website.

I think video spokes people will certainly become the norm for
communicating a brand message online. If a message is not personalized you're less connected to it and it's a widely established fact that peoples buying patterns are usually determined by an 'emotional' rather than 'logica'l reaction. Although Video spoke people may seem obtrusive and there is a danger you may not 'warm' to their way of delivering the risk is no greater than using a purely animated video which people may not respond to because of the way it's put together.i:e too flashy etc Video spokes people need to be an optional enhancement where users decide whether they play the video or not. They should also be closely tailored to the tone and overall look and feel of the brand.

I’m convinced video on websites will grow tremendously over the next few years. There may be some reluctance from the “techie” because they may find it an annoyance. But most visitors to websites are non-techs and are consumers seeking information about product and services. A video commercial or a spokes person can provide the guidance and information that will keep the consumer on the website longer. That can’t be bad.
The trick will be to get "quality" video production at a good value, not an easy task. But there are now websites that do offer both. Some websites allow you to make choices with actors, music, back ground, speaking style, titles, transitions and script making the pre-production process simple.
Also, if you’re going to create a video for your website wouldn’t it make sense to distribute it to the various video websites on the internet, i.e. YouTube etc? So you should think about how your web video may play beyond your own website.

I like how this makes websites come to life, so long as it's done professionally. I like the Done in Sixty Seconds model because it provides a templated way to make high-quality, unique videos.

The video spokesperson may not work as well for B2B products viewed in the workplace because computer sound is often muted in cube farms and other semi-private environments.

For the most part we've all become lazy readers and scan websites trting to find the key information quickly. A video spokesperson engages the visitor by communicating and engaging the potential customer like the printed work can never do. The Best prices seem to be from [Description and URL removed] Price for script, actor,m production and streaming is around 395.00. Haven't seen anyone beat these guys for quality of video, talent and service!

It seems hokey and old school marketing. What attention do you need to grab if the person is already at your website. I just want to know more about the product or service. If I wanted to have some to talk AT/WITH me, I would call.
If you test it, and it works, by all means. But really? This is the new wave of the web? I don't think so.

I think these days the best way to go when marketing your business is with video advertising. You can get your message across in the fastest time, and to the masses. Many people these days get frustrated with reading long articles, and would rather be entertained with a video.

Do people speaking directly to an audiance put them off or encourage them to remember your , message better? Easy to guess the answer because business products and services have been sold this way to us for decades,It is called TV advertising which is naturally now moving online.Just like TV adds we both like and loath them, but Im sure you can remember some of them and BRANDS sold at inflated prices are a testimonial that it works. I found it hard to find a UK company doing spokespeople until I found VideoOnWeb for our video' they charged 299, it was a hit with are viewers so we made 7 more.

Well, a nice marketing concept that will greatly appreciated. Although some companies could not go with that because of budget wise scheme.
