Lycos Dropping Lycos Mail, Tripod February 15

Well it looks like one of the last of the old school search companies is closing its email service and website creation and hosting service Tripod, according to emails sent to users.

The plug will be fully pulled and all data will be gone, so if you are still using any of these services you have about 4 weeks to grab all essential information before it is history.

Lycos once was a popular destination. I used it along with Alta Vista in my early forays in the search space. The company was no longer in the top ten of email providers - with an estimated global user base of under 500,000, according to TechCrunch.

Guess the old dog just can't find the bones anymore.

Correction: It's Lycos UK/Tripod UK that are shutting down, NOT Lycos, Inc./Tripod.com, based here in the States. The UK company is a separate entity, with different owners, etc., that licensed the Lycos and Tripod names, along with some technology years ago. They don't/can't play here in the US, hence the launch of their Jubii here in the States.

CORRECTION - This original article posted by Michael Arrington pertains to products and services offered by Lycos Europe and has absolutley nothing to do with the Lycos Tripod and Lycos Mail business units offered through Lycos operations in the U.S.

A completely separate entity from Lycos Europe, Lycos Inc. (www.lycos.com) continues to operate social media, publishing and search services including both Tripod and Lycos Mail.

Currently, Tripod is the #17 social networking site worldwide (comScore MM Dec. 2008), with millions of member pages hosted, published and visited each month.

Mr. Arrington has updated his post with the correct information. For Lycos's statement, go to: http://www.buzz.lycos.com/index.blog?entry_id=1874608
