Microsoft, Yahoo Take Major Hits in Nielsen Online Search Share Rankings for October 2008
Microsoft and Yahoo took a tumble in their year-over-year search share in October 2008, according to Nielsen Online. All searches were down 2%, which is quite surprising considering the election and the economy. Yahoo was down 12% and Microsoft was down 19%. Ask.com took a hit as well with a decrease of 22.9%
The news was much brighter for Google and AOL. Both saw sizeable increases at 8.1% and 14.5% respectively.
Google continues to dominate the search engine industry at a 61.2% market share.

Just another hint on the real state of the economy.
Not only did President elect bring the masses out like never before (voter participation was huge) but it has been documented that the internet played a role like never anticipated for both political parties. Add the volumes of homework my 4 children perform on a nightly bases and the percentage that is dependent on the internet/ Search is staggering. My 7 year old is a search princess...only necessitated thur school projects. If I'm only half correct in my observations then search traffic should have spiked thru the roof. To have only gained 2% would leave me to conclude that e-commerce/ retail related search tanked. And this is just one of the many indicators that has the holiday forecast in the toilet.

I would have thought that Google would have been at a higher % than what is stated here.. In most peoples opinions and in write ups they dominate the search market..

Many people's first experience with search is with Live Search. It doesn't take them long to move over to Google though once they've used it.
