Yahoo Updates Social Profiles, Adds Local SearchMonkey Apps to Default

Seems Google wasn't the only one with some updates to release at the end of this week. Yahoo gets in on the action by updating social profiles and setting some SearchMonkey apps for local content to default.

First up, Yahoo profiles are going universal. In other words, you can manage your Yahoo profile from various Yahoo properties. The goal is to eventually be able to manage your profile from non-Yahoo sites embracing OpenSocial.

It will be nice when that happens, because I much prefer Yahoo's minimalistic and easy-to-use profile than most social networks:

Meanwhile, Citysearch and Zagat are having their SearchMonkey apps set to default. That means all users will see their uniquely coded results (when relevant, of course) during Yahoo searches. Here's how the Citysearch one will look:

In August, Yahoo set Yelp, LinkedIn and Yahoo Local apps to default.

All I can say is that this could be one of Yahoo!'s biggest mistakes up to date, and is was NOT received well by their users, as anyone can see from Yahoo!'s own blog dedicated to this matter: http://www.yprofileblog.com/blog/index.php/2008/10/16/welcome-to-the-new-profiles-blog/#comment-633

I'll spare readers from see the list of everything that's wrong with this whole new profile system, their own blog being able to shed light on that, and get right to the biggest mistakes with this. The new system for the profiles is suppose to be a beta, but looks and feels far from even being complete. Users are not given an option as to if they want this or to continue using the old profile system, where as every time Yahoo! had a beta for their e-mail, it would always be optional. And last but not least, Yahoo! didn't even ask us, the users, if we wanted this, nor did they give us any suitable warning of this change on their own site. So Yahoo! has really screwed up with this new "up-date" of their's.

Its not just profiles blog, look at Messenger blog and Groups Blog. Universally despised, almost as much as the new Yahoo News interface. 1 week, 4 products suffer big alienations. Layoffs and stocks dropping? Coinkidink? Hm...
