Google No Longer Directory Promoter?

Search Engine Watch Editor Brian E. Ussery noticed Google's Webmaster Guidelines suggestions for improving your sites has removed.getting links from directories. This is not to say Google is not using directories in the algorithm, just they are not pitching for them.

Great catch Brian - good article!

The DOJ is currently reviewing the Google/Yahoo deal. It would make sense to me to remove references advocating use of directories that might be construed as evidence of anti-trust/ monopolistic practices. See: http://tech.yahoo.com/news/ap/20081002/ap_on_hi_te/tec_yahoo_google

I think its fair to say that Google does not like directories anymore, after all each update seems to take more PR away from directories with some dropping down to PR0.

Not sure what the thinking behind it is, but if Google means that links become less important, then it might also be that its focusing on a better Word now
