Matt Cutts Shares 5 SEO Tips with USA Today
USA Today recently asked Google's Matt Cutts for tips to help sites rank in their search engine. Cutts offered up 5 tips plus a word of advice in implementing the tips. Here they are:
- Spotlight your search term on the page. If you want to be found for your keyword, make sure that term is on the page you want to rank. The term should be at the top as well as peppered throughout your copy.
- Fill in your "tags." The two most important tags are Title and Description b/c that's what is displayed on the search results.
- Get other sites to "link" back to you. This is one of the most important of the 100 factors Google considers when ranking sites
- Create a blog and post often. This can help you get links.
- Register for free tools. Cutts recommends using the tools at google.com/webmaster, as well as creating a text-based sitemap www.xml-sitemaps.com, and adding your business to Google's Local Business center (google.com/local/add)
And that word of advice? Don't overdo it. In other words, don't stuff your pages full of keywords.
What do you think of Cutts' advice? Leave a comment!

PiticStyle June 23, 2008 6:20 PM
Thats a great advice on making use of sitemaps and adding business listing to google local business.
Ankit nagarsheth June 23, 2008 7:31 PM
Nothing suprising here. I wish he would have given more for us to work with.
Christine June 23, 2008 9:32 PM
Funny how USA Today has found out there are 100 elements to the search algorithm....
very basic seo advise but the importance of inbound links is always there... and listings in Google Business - have not tried that one
Aussiewebmaster June 23, 2008 11:25 PM
Funny thing is, no matter how much you hammer home the SEO basics, thousands of companies and their web staff ignore them and yet they continue to wonder why their search engine visibility isn't any better.
Lee Odden June 23, 2008 11:42 PM
Basic SEO 101 tips indeed, but good for those who don't or didn't know.
longtail eMarketing June 24, 2008 2:37 AM
No real surprise in this article.
Maybe going into details about the top 5 could help out some more readers.
Online Marketing Group June 24, 2008 3:31 AM
Confirming what we already knew..
John June 24, 2008 11:10 AM
For beginners maybe but useful for people like me who don't know much about the Internet.
Vic June 24, 2008 12:03 PM
I think, that he didn't said anything other than the normal stuff. Nevertheless, following his advice and target the pages towards human plus get some incoming links, may be all that there is to it, really.
Ken June 25, 2008 6:24 AM
Again, nothing many of us didn't already know. At the end of the day PPC Ads is where the money is, so one can't really be too surprised by the lack of detail. Personally.
Picking up on an earlier post "my website rank is down..." is another reason why you cannot rely solely on organic listings.
For most small business' working to a tight budget, I'd recommend a combination of pay-per-click marketing and ethical SEO.
particulary in tough business sectors like property, gambling, mortgages and insurance.
Steve June 25, 2008 8:07 AM
these are some good words of advice......
for my main keywords my mainsite and other sites rank very well.... try searching for Marica Real Estate, and i guarantee you find my site: www.investmentsonthebeach.com
i also would add:
1 do social networking to spread your link
2 do not put outbound links on your site
3 add videos to youtube.com with your weblink
4 add photos to flickr
5 post articles on article sites with your link
www.investmentsonthebeach.com
anthony June 25, 2008 10:33 AM
Nothing new..but good news for beginners.
sushilver June 26, 2008 12:50 AM
It looks like he is just summing up what everyone already knows. But that's Matt Cutts.
@ anthony: With reference to your 2nd tip: if nobody puts outbound links, as you suggest, where will inbound links come from?
Helen Copy911 June 26, 2008 9:09 AM
Nothing new and everyone is right, it's for beginners. However, there are a lot more beginners on the net than there are experienced webmasters and the big G is doing what it can to help them.
For the advanced people the only thing that would help is letting all of us see their ranking algorythmn and that ain't gonna happen.
Mr Lee June 26, 2008 2:53 PM
Yeah I agree with Lee Odden about tons of businesses ignoring the basics but still, that headline was a bit of a bait-and-switch. Anybody who knows who Matt Cutts is already knows all that stuff. Here I was clicking through thinking, "Alright! the Google god is revealing some juicy groundbreaking tips and tricks!" and it turns out to be this.
This article would have been better titled "Google Rep Reiterates Some SEO Basics"
Rob Thunder June 26, 2008 4:56 PM
Ethical SEO. Thats good. Cutts just shares the basics. If I had a dollar for every web designer that would say "huh?" to this list.
Tampa SEO June 27, 2008 5:52 AM
Reading the comments here makes me wonder who this group I would want working on my website. The content in this interview was ideally suited to the intended audience in the USA Today demographic. The example Matt gave of the San Diego chiropractor is all to common in professionally designed websites. If only his recommendations were followed most websites would perform well in less competitive businesses. The Amazon affiliate will not be helped, and was not in the intended audience.
Ed Shea June 27, 2008 5:56 PM
Every service and product has a life cycle. The SEO industry has one, and imo, we're still in the infancy (or introduction) stages. I can have a long argument about why we're not in the growth stage, yet.
Until we hit the maturity stage, SEO will continue to have a flood of newbies and uneducated webmasters and business owners.
So, we'll continue to see mainstream media play the 101 level, even from Gurus like Matt. We MUST educate these business owners somehow in order to grow the SEO industry mainstream. That is what USA Today is doing.
I find it amazing such a large publication catering to our demographics has discussed the importance of SEO, basic or not. SEO is becoming more and more difficult and leaning towards quality over quantity.
Remember the quote "The tide raises all ships"
Scott Gallagher June 30, 2008 2:53 PM
Well, nothing new but the tips are as real as they can be.
Tony July 1, 2008 11:35 AM
Good tips!
Anne July 1, 2008 11:37 AM
I wonder why so many people complain that this is beginners advice. Matt Cutts stated in this interview that this is beginners advice and that many Seos probably know already.
Michael Janik July 3, 2008 6:08 AM
Sort of agree with what Mr Lee said - "Anybody who knows who Matt Cutts already knows that stuff." - although maybe Matt is suggesting that we should spend our time concentrating on these important 5 instead of searching for new miracle SEO secrets!!!
At the end of the day we're all just scratching around trying our best to improve our positions & we must enjoy it or we'd be doing something else for a living...
Wireless Burglar Alarms July 3, 2008 9:42 AM
The tips are basic, but how come so many website I review don't follow the basics?
Cutts posted the basics because they work, and if you want to try to read between the lines...
=:)

JBush July 3, 2008 3:03 PM
Yes, it is the same tips that we have heard again and again - but I think it is a good idea to reiterate them. Doing so ensures that we are all clear about the basics of SEO.
Central Coast SEO July 3, 2008 7:35 PM
Spot on Matt.
The people complaining that these tips are "for beginnners" or "thanks for nothing" are exactly the type of people who Google don't want to rank highly for.
If you're simply looking for a quick buck from your blog or website, then you're gonna have to work hard like the rest of us, i.e. creating content worth reading.
John.
John D Stewart July 4, 2008 3:44 PM
Odds are that most people who've heard of Matt Cutts and know how to edit their own "tags" probably already know this stuff. For the folks who don't know anything about SEO, what are they going to do with this information? If you're running a small business you probably don't have time to take on writing a blog anyway.
keith July 6, 2008 8:51 PM
I looked at three client sites today that although they were well aged, and had over 100+ pages of content they did not have unique descriptions or title tags. So yes Matt does need to keep mentioning the basics.

iwebie July 9, 2008 2:21 AM
didn't you know? there is nothing beyond SEO 101 :)
chovy July 10, 2008 4:30 PM
SEO 101 indeed...these tips are common knowledge to anyone in SEO and for most savvy web designers but general public can barely grasp the concept of the importance of link building

As always he is on the money but as many have said this is basic SEO.I wish we could get something more than just the basics but, i will take what I can get. Thanks Matt

Thanks for the Tips Mate,This was a great advice for me because i am a beginner. Thanks a lot.
Jamal March 26, 2009 6:06 AM
These tips are just the basic stuff that everybody know of, and i guess that is the reason why he talks about just these things. If google were to release everything about their algorithm it would be like a suicide. The search engine would be full of spam and no good content. Not to mention that it would be almost impossible for us who abide internet rules to rank for anything.
Test av fotballsko April 3, 2009 1:07 PM
I think lots of content with many inbound link would be most important.
