Gates: Microsoft will Build World's Best Search Engine

Last year, Bill Gates announced that his focus for his remaining full-time work at Microsoft would be search. But the job is not yet done and now he's announced that search will be a projects he will be involved with post-retirement (besides his Chairmanship). Buried in the stories about Windows 7 and its multitouch abilities is a statement from the software giant's founder about his vision for the future of Microsoft's search.

"I'm very involved in search, the internal development," he told the audience at the D6 conference. "We will build the world's best search."

Do you think Gates can pull it off? Discuss in the comments.

I won't say it's not possible, just HIGHLY unlikely. They're pretty much entering the market, as far as I'm concerned. Yes, they've had a search engine for a hell of a long time, and yes it's rather popular. But they have a far way to go to meet the leading search provider. Here's a tip, they can start with their webmaster tools...

Gates is full of hyperbole. Either he's delusionary or a faker or both. Every pronouncement he and Bollmer make is over the top. MSFT shareholders have been diminished greatly by this charletan. My considerable investment has been underwater for over seven tears. His charity should begin at home with his stakeholders. Has he learned nothing from hob nobbing with Buffett, the man whose shareholders adore?

Being an outsider to the world of Search Engines and the Internet I have a different less convoluted answer to Bill Gates vision of a bigger & better search engine.

Go back to the first and original form of advertising. I have put together a Plan that would generate a billion (or so) new home page users for any search engine wanting to be the next goliath of the Internet. How? Ask me.

It's unlikely. Depends what talent he can get on short notice. Isn't this the reason Microsoft can't walk away from Yahoo?

Gates in on the right track. Google results are way too easily spammed. Several businesses have recently been sabotaged through the manipulation of Google results by competitors, and the result has been that they have gone, or are going, out of business.

Most of the results are, unfortunately, spam. A brand name is hard to die, but if the quality continues to be diminished, in terms of usability, there is room for something better. Gates may be on the very right track.

Hey! didn't MSFT just conclude the acquisition of FAST Search And Transfer - the creators of All The Web and one of the best crawling technologies in the world with much of the Alta Vista IP??
If he is prepared to throw some money at it he's got some good knowledge in FAST.

Though we can not underestimate Gates & MS, by the time they come up with their World's Best Search Engine, SE standards are going to be far ahead and Google's SE will be above par.
Here the scope MS have is, they can make a Search Engine that can not be optimized unlike Google SE(As many try to optimize Google with SEO techniques)

MS doesn't lack the technology to compete effectively in the search engine market--they lack the investment in the infrastructure necessary to provide Google's fast and reliable search results. When MS matches (or exceeds) Google's server farms, then the Redmond software titan may begin to turn things around.

Bill G will build the world's best search engine and will silence his critics, as he has done so many times before :)

Good idea, Good focus, good goal.
Bad timing, Late launch, a lot of hard work, research, time, energy = a lot to learn. When I think of windows I think microsoft and thats it.

When I think of google or yahooo i think of unix,linux,w3c,Mozilla-firefox, open soucre resources, acessibility, usabillity, seo, internet techonology, marketing, advertising, java, php, python, css, etc etc etc...

Bill youve got what it takes to be the best.
Do you have the support?

If you cant beat them join them!

Sailosi  July 10, 2008 8:18 PM

Well, it looks like bing is much closer what Bill Gates was trying to say. It's search has lot of improvements over google. But for relevance, it's the mighty google. MSFT has to go a long way to beat them.
