Shopping Search Engines and Consumer Trust

Shopping search engines pioneered the idea of displaying an online merchant's reputation based on ratings provided by shoppers who actually bought products from a merchant. But how trustworthy are these reputation rankings? How do the shopping search engines prevent merchants from gaming their reviews, or other merchants slamming their competitors?
